So I recently found a writing program that fits my goals, need for structure, and is working well for dc. (IEW)

I've tweaked SWR and have decided to stay the course (have 2 years invested in this program as well).

Then there is grammar. I really like the idea of waiting until 6th and doing AG, yet am worried I'll "ruin" my kids by not doing formal grammar until then and since they take tests yearly, I need something. I tried FLL, R&S, and GWG. None "spoke" to me or were what I had in mind. So this weekend I headed to Barnes & Noble to check out the Spectrum workbooks, before deciding between Daily Grams or Evan Moor's Language Arts. In with the Spectrum Language Arts was a series called "Flashkids". I looked at workbooks 1-5 and really like them, they are cover a wide range of skills and seem quite kid friendly. And at $5.50 each after the homeschool discount, you can't beat the price. So I decided to try them. My kids enjoyed them today. I don't recall seeing this series mentioned here before.

My youngest used Flashkids Spelling until she was ready for Sequential Spelling and Megawords.

My youngest and my middle both use Flashkids Language Arts.

I really like the series. It's inexpensive and gets the job done.

My first grader is using FlashKids Spelling, and likes it a lot. It is similar to Spelling Workout, but is more visually appealing for him, and cheaper for me. Gotta love that teacher discount. :D

AngieW,
Does the Flashkids LA do much for reviewing? I have been really interested in this series for awhile but my local Barnes and Noble doesn't carry any workbooks.

It doesn't have review sections or tests, but each level will take the work from the previous year just one notch further.

You should be able to have your B&N order the workbooks for you to look at. You aren't obligated to buy it.

first grade book as our basis for first grade. It's huge (more than 600 pages if I recall) and seemed very complete in the grammar and spelling. Even the math had introductions and periodic reviews. It was pretty neat.

I wish they had a preschool book.

Angie W,
Thanks for your response. I'm going on vacation the first of March to Springfield, MO and they have a Barnes and Noble. I'll check and see if they have it first before going through my local store.

for afterschooling my daughter and I've been very happy with it. I use their math and reading comprehension.

I recently recommended them to a friend for helping her catch up in a couple of skills and she was happy with them also.

we went ahead and started with them. I'm really leaning toward using this series for LA through 5th then going into AG.
