DD wants to know are there and were there real princesses? What kind of books can I get for her? Doing a search of non-fiction in the library gives me hundreds of folk tales. I am not sure why they are in the non-fiction section.

Also she wants to know if the princesses are real... like the little mermaid. I knew the story behind that one so I told her about Hans Christian Anderson's friend who was crippled. I would like to find out that type of information to share with her about the other stories. I need all the disney ones of course... especially Mulan, her current favorite.

I am sure someone has already done this. :):D

I came across these several months ago - they're ready to read Level 3 books about real princesses. The link takes you directly to one, then if you scroll down you can see more.

Wow, these look really cool! I'll have to keep these in mind for when dd gets to this reading level.

Ignore the slightly negative tone in the Amazon blurb-I am VERY conservative and though it was okay. They do mention the media, and a few things like that meant to appeal to kids who know about that stuff from school but dd9 was able to just look past it.

No first hand experience, but these look intriguing:

To Be a Princess: The Fascinating Lives of Real Princesses by Hugh Brewster (http://www.amazon.com/Be-Princess-Fascinating-Lives-Princesses/dp/0060294809/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231528262&sr=1-2)

Real Princesses: An Inside Look at the Royal Life by Valerie Wilding (http://www.amazon.com/Real-Princesses-Inside-Look-Royal/dp/0802796753/ref=pd_sim_b_4)

and two I can personally recommend (a little off topic):

Heroines: Great Women Through the Ages by Rebecca Hazell (http://www.amazon.com/Heroines-Great-Women-Through-Ages/dp/0789202107/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c)

Ten Queens: Portraits of Women of Power by Milton Meltzer (http://www.amazon.com/Ten-Queens-Portraits-Women-Power/dp/0525471588/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231528666&sr=1-1)

Thanks for all of the princess information. I think DD will really love these books.

I still don't have anything on the origin of fairy tales??

My daughter has enjoyed "The Royal Diaries" series by Scholastic. Here's a link with book titles: http://www.kidsreads.com/series/series-royal-diaries-titles.asp
