I am thinking of signing ds up for this when he turns 11 at the end of June. Does anyone have experience, know anything about the time commitment and what time of year the run the boot camps and all. If possible I think we will go with the navy branch (I'm from a family of submen and dh's best friend graduated from the merchant marine academy) but I think the CAP is similar but the Air force version so info on that would be nice too. I know they have a local unit and if there isn't a close NSC unit we would opt for CAP.

I was in CAP as a teen many moons ago. There is generally a weekly meeting that is about 2 hours. In the summer there is encampment which is 1 week long and is generally at a military base of some sort.
If he decideds to get involved in Search and Rescue you can expect that you will have several weekends a year where they do practice missions. If he decides to get involved with the drill team they usually have Saturday practice for a few hours every week or every other week and possibly a weeknight leading up to the state competition.
It is a great program.
