We don't have cable but I'd like to have access to some of the great shows on the "educational" type channels like History or Discovery Channel or other educational but engaging shows.
Would Netflix have this type of thing or is there something else? We did sign up for what seems to be a modified version of United Streaming on our computer through our local PBS station, and while it has some good shows like Liberty's Kids, etc., most of them seem to be geared toward "classroom viewing" and aren't really engaging. My kids would love History Channel and so on, but we don't want to get full cable for it, plus we'd like to avoid the commercials. (Materialistic commercials in general drive us crazy, plus my dc saw a commercial for a documentary type thing about aliens and didn't sleep for a week!!!:tongue_smilie:)
The cable companies should offer a package with just the family-friendly and educational shows like this!!

I posted on the general board also:
If it's available on DVD then Netflix will most likely have it.
We had Netflix when we lived way out in the boonies and I ordered documentaries produced by the History Channel, Biography Channel, and National Geographic all the time.
Netflix has WAY more than just movies.

That kind of stuff is exactly why I got Netflix. And it is still the bulk of our Netflix usage.
As the other poster said, if it's available on DVD (as are most of the History Channel and Discovery Channel programs), then Netflix probably has it.

Yeah, that's what we use Netflix for, mostly. I wish Netflix had a better search engine, though. That really annoys me a lot.

and then put it in? Doesn't look like you can browse around very well.

what we got netflix for. We have watched over 2oo educational or documentary movies...nothing else.
What you can do is start out, watching Ken Burns documentaries and BBC documentaries- always excellent. Then, you need to rate them right away, give them four or five stars.
Then the Netflix system will start working for you and you will start to get suggestions. Go through the suggestions and put them in your queue right away, b/c I think this also affects how the suggestions list pop up. Another thing is, if you don't like a suggestion, be sure to check "Not interested." We think this may also affect our suggestions.
OUr suggestion list is so useful now, we seldom have to look around any more.

We use www.aplusvideorentals.com (http://www.aplusvideorentals.com) and love it. I've never tried Netflix so I can't compare them. It's very easy to search for what you want. We use MFW & are doing RTR this year. Our TM has a very extensive list of books & videos by week & subject. I went through the list for the 2nd half of the year and A+ had every video recommended except 1. We only get one at a time, but you can choose more if you want to pay more. They are all in my queue and when we return one they send the next one. It's been great!!!
