I was curious what your thoughts were on this unit study. I have a 3rd and 8th grader.
Could you give a synopsis of this study?
We are adopting 2 shih-poo puppies this weekend.
Thanks!

We have it.
It covers things such as dog terminology, senses, relationships with wolves, dog body language and how to show your own body language, dog jobs, common names, dog shows and quite a bit about those, specific breed(you pick which ones) questions, groupings of dogs and about each of those, different sizes, some dog sayings and their meanings, body language to other dogs and what they mean, dog anatomy, history of, iditarod, safety with dogs, caring for, famous dogs, colors and markings, geography(where scertain breeds come from), normal behavior.

They also have a large section of additional activites with lots of different ideas, books to read, resources on the internet, different dog movies(minly fiction ones).

So, all in all it is pretty good. I am a licensed veterinary technician and my daughter knows more about the care so we will add to that but we do not watch much tv(we do not have, only Netflix) so we might try some of those for fun extras. The nice thing about most of the books is you can extend for more research on a specific title.

I would also check into the 4-H book. We LOVED that and are still doing it,

Hi Allene,
You have been helpful. That unit sounds neat.
What is the name of the 4-H book? What is that like?
Thanks!

THe First year book is Wiggles and Wags.
Covers anatomy, breeds, housetraining, training of different types, body language with tails, fleas and heakth care, teeth, ears, eyes, saying good bye(euthanasia or just loss of a pet or helping someone else through that),bathing, basic commands.
Pluys every small section has a BUNCH of extra ideas that you can do. We did a ton of extra things. My daughter won a Grand Champion and her and her puppy took First place in the showing as well. You do not have to join a club but it started right at the time we were getting ours and so timing worked. More fun in a small group.
We LOVE the 4-H books for the dogs and are doing the next one now. Still lots of fun but we are a highly motivated animal family.:)
Good luck and have fun,
Allene

Thanks Allene!
Those books look neat!
I looked them up on the 4-H national website.
We may try those. My children are very excited to adopt their puppies. I wish it weren't going to be so cold next week, since that is their 1st week home!!!

We enjoy them a lot. They really make the whole learning aobut something fun and even gave me some other ideas.
I know what you mean about the weather. i sent my daughter out to walk the dog today and they both were slipping all over the ice. Of course my daughter cannot really walk our puppy anymore as she is outweighed by her by 50 lbs right now.:) Just quick potty breaks in and out.
Have fun though and do not forget sweaters for those little ones. They look so cute. You could even have your children make some. Easy if you use fleece or knit them if they know how to knit.
