Oh my! This is a daunting task.... I was all set to use a company like NARS to issue my dd a transcript and diploma, but after talking with them today, I'm not so sure that's what I need to do. Are there any other companies or am I going to HAVE to do this alone. Oh my... hyperventilating slightly here...

Just to give you some comfort if you decide to DIY, it's not as hard as it seems. Google homeschool transcript & you'll get a ton of hits & free forms. The main secret is to keep everything & do a transcript yearly to keep it all organized (adding in each new year.) Most colleges we've encountered don't want lots of paperwork, just the transcript & application. If you need additional stuff, you'll have it in your portfolio & can put it together w/o months of effort.

I just got three books from the library and they are very helpful.

college-prep homeschooling
and what about college
homeschooling college admissions handbook

I just picked them up because I wanted to see what they recommend prior to starting HS. They all have info about diplomas and all 3 pretty much say you dont need to go through another program to get a diploma. As long as you have your test scores, and transcripts...you just make your own. They suggest you name your school and then label your diploma. The last page I read said most colleges dont ask "Do you have an Accredited Diploma?" but instead they ask "Do you have a diploma?" Which you would answer Yes!

I guess there is a lot of different views on the topic.

Seconding what K-FL wrote. It's easy peasy. Just download a form and fill it out. It you want it to look especially "official" print it on paper with a watermark.

Having a computerized grading program can help a lot. I have Edu-Trac and others use Homeschool tracker. You just type in the courses and the grades along the way. The computer saves the information and when you need a transcript your computer has all the info you need and both programs print one out with the GPA and your grading system already marked on them. They look very professional. Edu-Trac even has a diploma you can print out and grade cards if you want them as well. They also have a place for you to keep track of all the extra's you might want like reading lists, textbook information, course summaries. I'd recommend keeping those especially the course summaries. Some colleges want them but they're not hard to write. Many of them can be found in the catalogs you get from homeschool supply companies like Rainbow Resource. Keep some of their work like math test, science reports, writing samples. It really has been easy but the computerized grading program really saved me when I was doing all the college admission stuff. It was just press a button and out came what I needed. I personally don't think you need an umbrella school or anything else to give you grades and a diploma. I did it all on my own for my first one and am doing it all one my own for my last one. We haven't had a problem.

I made my own and haven't had any trouble...it's really not hard at all. Then I ordered a nice diploma--I could have made that, too, but I really like the ones at http://homeschooldiploma.com/.

Like Sandy, I also have a home-made transcript. I modeled it after a very nice example that I found in the files in the Yahoo group hs2coll (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hs2coll/). It's in an Excel format. I'd be happy to send you a copy if you'd like.
