I loaned my copy of TWTM to a friend yesterday. Of course I need it now because I'm tenatively planning for next year. Can someone tell me what is good for 5th grade biology? Or what the TWTM recommends for the same?
Thanks.

I am using the noeo science germs II for my fifth grader. It is pretty much what TWTM tells you to do, only it has a teacher's manuel and a schedul all set up for you. I detest science and like that I don't have to do much for it. Of course there is that pesky little problem the brine shrimp I mentioned on the general board. Over all I think it is good and does science the way TWTM wants. Of course we also check out books relating to the animals studied each week and she does narrations etc.

The books recommended in TWTM are "How Nature Works" and "How the Body Works" with experiments added in from "Creepy Crawlies."
I also purchased an older used copy of the Science Explorer Life Science from Prentice Hall. I have correlated them and plan to follow the sequence from the textbook, but using the books recommended in TWTM whenever possible because my ds is very visual and TWTM recommendations didn't seem rigorous enough for what I wanted.
I will be using this for the 6th grade, though.

We have found that WTM 5th grade science is not at all meeting the needs of my 10yo. There is not enough challenging or interesting content. I have those two books and seldom use them. v. disappointing.
We hadn't done any of the elementary apologia books before, so ds is working through those himself. He covers an entire lesson each day, so he is zooming through all of them. This is one subject when he happily writes, albeit with atrocious spelling :tongue_smilie:
When he has done all of them we will move on to the other Apologia books.

I believe they have a biology program. Their other science stuff seems really good so I imagine that their bio program will be good, too.
It is not in my copy of WTM but that's okay by me.

I'm using How Nature Works and How the Body Works as my spines for this year, along with a long list of other living books and tons of worksheets, etc., that I pulled together from the web, experiments from various of these books, raising and observing of various critters, etc.
I'm happy to send you my plan for the year if you'd like to see it. Just email me, please, as it's too long to be able to post here.
