View Full Version : Any recommendations on a HS Health Text to use in one semester?

My dd has decided to go to public high school next year. She will be finishing her 9th grade this year. However, after talking with the school they strongly recommended we do a health class so she can have credit for health and PE. We only have a semester and it is very full so I would love to find a easy one - not time consuming.

Thanks

Abeka is what we've been using... I haven't looked at the HS text yet, but it is designed for one semester.

Total Health has instructions for doing it in one semester. It might be too time consuming if you use all the extra materials, but if you just read through it & discuss it together, it shouldn't take too long. There are a few activities in the textbook, too, so it wouldn't be 100% reading.

Another option would be to do your own thing. I had my dd research each nutrient one year. I had a list of questions on each & I think she learned a lot (what happens if too little, what happens if too much, water or fat soluble, what foods do you find it in in our kitchen, etc.).

You can also add any safety courses such as boating, hunting, driving, etc. plus CPR/1st Aid. Think of it as a merit badge or 4H type project. :)

I saw total health at CBD thought it was a little expensive but I think we may just go for it. My sister is a school nurse and she plans to do a CPR cert. with her. She said she could pick up a text but honestly I would rather have a christian related text.

Thanks Everyone

:)We have been using Total Health, but we have spread it over a year. It would be a lot to cram into one semester. However, as another poster suggested, you could cut out a lot of the extras. I believe there are 16 chapters. The reading is not too heavy; a chapter a week is certainly not overwhelming. Just cut down on the worksheets, etc. and it is very possible to finish in a semester.

I think we will just plan to read through it and not do many activities. My sister who is a school nurse said they don't even use a textbook in the HS here anymore. Honesty I don't think the schools put alot into it. However, I think it will be good for Amy to learn some basics of health.

Thanks for your comments
