Will this book work with ny 5th grade daughter who is a sensitive reader? She won't be able to stomach too much gloom.
Thanks.

We've not looked for a sub, just yet. We're just living in happy land for now. :)

Is it more trial (gloom) or mor triumph? Not sure I could take the gloom either.
I read it aloud to my daughter, but had to skip parts in several chapters. It is somewhat graphic when talking about martyrs and how they die. I wouldn't call it gloomy--it's really triumph--but it is too graphic for my tastes. Otherwise, it is a good book.
We're reading the Peril & Peace series now. On the whole, I like it better. It mixes in a lot of historical fiction, though. (Writing dialogue and action that could have happened.)

Donelda,
I have been looking at the Peril and Peace series and was wondering the same thing about these books. Nothing too graphic for your kids so far?

No, P&P is a very different style than T&T. I am reading it aloud as well (although dd could read it easily.) I remember only one place where I skipped something--not as graphic as T&T--but dd and I are both squeamish. We've gone through P&P and Monks and Mystics so far, and we've really liked them.

Trial and Triumph is mostly trial through the first half of the book.
I haven't pulled it back out because it just got depressing.
I know that it really happened, but that doesn't mean that I want to read about it every day.
My 4th and 6th grade boys were shocked by the stories that I read to them.
And I edited some of the details out.
There were some amazing stories, though.
I'd say, find something lighter~

I bought this book a year and a half ago. I still have not done it with my guys because it is so strong. Next year we are in history two and I want to supplement with this book. I will have to weigh this out. DH says that it true and they have to learn the truth some time. I am apprehensive. My older son was reading Plutarch and it came up to a part where the men drank blood and he freaked out. We had to change readings and come back to that person in a few years.
I guess I will see how Trial and Triumph go.
May the Lord bless your New Year.
Sincerely,
Karen

Any suggestions for an alternative to the Trial and Triumph, other than the Peril and Peace series?
Thanks so much.

OK, I'll be the voice of dissension. We really like Trial and Triumph! We use Ambleside Online, and they don't read it every week. It's a chapter here and there. Maybe that's why we like it? We might be reading what the Ambleside Editors see as age appropriate.
Blessings!

Dorinda,
I enjoy a descenting voice! You did not find what you have read to be too gloomy? My daughter was devistated by the plot on Cleopatras life and had to give up that book in the Royal Diaries..........I don't want her to be troubled by what we are reading.
Thanks for your input.

Julie,
Here's what we've read:
Chapter 10-Charlemagne
Chapter 11 - Alfred the Great King
Chapter 12 - Anselm
We'll only read through Chapter 18 for this year. Here's the link to Ambleside (www.amblesideonline.com)Online if you want to look at how they divide the book.
I asked my daughter if she liked it or not, she says yes, but sometimes it's boring:lol:. I asked her if it bothers her when the people die. She said it always bothers her when people die, especially good people. I think if she reacted the way your daughter did to Cleopatra, I would pre-read the chapter and decide if she could handle it or not. My dd reacts VERY strongly to movies when people die (ET is banned from our home until further notice, and Little House on the Prairie is watched in small doses). I never thought about her getting upset by the books we read, and she hasn't. It might be because they're books and she can move past it if she hasn't "seen" it. Also, when we talk about martyrs, or characters that have died, we talk about the good that they did and how everyone dies. Since it's in the context of History, that may help. I think if she couldn't handle talking about death, I would put off books like this. But, every child reacts differently.
Sorry I haven't been much help:001_unsure:. I think you'll just have to read excerpts from the book and decide based on your dd. If you find an alternative, post it. I'm curious as to what else is out there.
Blessings!

I just had another thought. Are you using CHOW? We read that once a week and it has many of the same characters, but in a light way. No gloom and doom.

Actually, you have been tons of help, I will look at the link.
I was planning on using What Really Happened During the Middle Ages by Nothing New Press.
I should look into CHOW as well.
