We've been using a very relaxed method for teaching grammar, mainly using Learn Language Arts thru Literature, for the past 2 yrs. We haven't used it consistently. So my 5th grade son knows about 4 parts of speech, capitalization rules and punctuation. I want to approach grammar more systematically with him and my 2nd grader. I think I'm going to get FLL 1&2 and work thru it with my 7.5yob. I was wondering if R&S 5 grammar would be to much, especially starting in January, or should we go back to 4? I like the systematic approach to R&S and would do most of it orally and use the worksheets.

Well, your ds might know more parts of speech if you'd used LLATL consistently, yes? LLATL is a complete English course, not just grammar; long-time users have reported excellent results by the end of the course in all areas of English.

Anyway, if you go to R&S, I would suggest starting with the 4th grade text; I would expect an 11yo dc to do most of the assignments himself--IOW, writing everything, not doing it orally.

Also, you'd need to add spelling and reading/literature. Did you already have a plan for those?
