I am seriously looking into teaching my kids Latin and would like to know what resources are out there to do it. We would be starting in the Summer/Fall after I get a chance to learn some Latin and figure out what will work. When we start I will have a 6th grader, a 4th grader and a Kindergartener. I do not know Latin at all. I am planning on learning between now and when we start., My husband does know Latin, but works icky hours and has NO interest in teaching Latin after working all day.
So can you help me come up with a list of what is out there to teach Latin to kids and to me?
Thank you.

I'm learning latin along with my boys using Lively Latin. It's fun, easy (in the sense that you just do the next page, moves slowly, has plenty of review, and you don't need to prepare anything in advance) I wouldn't recommend it for a k'r, though. Although my ds4 is learning some Latin words just by listening to us. LOL.

This looks interesting. I am looking at the Free Intro now. Do you think you are going to finish the book in one year or is there more (or less) material than that?
Do you think it would work for both a sixth grader and a fourth grader?

We started in mid-May, and we're halfway through Big Book 1. We've done about 1 page/day. My kids prefer to read all of the history pages in each Lesson in one sitting, (she has them broken up throughout the lesson) I think the first Lesson took us the longest-I thought it would take us 2 yrs to get through the book, but after that it went quicker.
I'm not sure about a 6th grader. Probably. There are parts of exercises where the student draws a simple picture (of a bull, for example) that I think older kids may or may not enjoy. But of course you don't *have* to draw the picture, the point is to translate the Latin words.
I guess the biggest plus for me is that we all understand the Lessons (we are learning Latin) and we all enjoy the Big Book.

A lot of people like Lively Latin. Other popular choices are Latin for Children and Latina Christiana (their very first book is called Prima Latina).
There are lots of Latin choices out there! Have fun shopping!

Most of the programs available to homeschoolers are listed and reviewed at Paula's Archives (http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/latincurricula.htm).

Wow! There are more Latin curriculums than I thought. I know what I will be looking at for a while.

I used Getting Started With Latin for my (then) 6th grader and it was a wonderful introduction for both of us. He is now using Latin Prep supplemented with Oxford which we both like. I will be using Lively Latin with my 2nd grader next year but in looking at the materials it could be good for a 4th grader as well.
