How do you use this program? Do you do one lesson a week and if so do you do it all in one day? Thanks

and we generally do one lesson a day. Just recently (about lesson 15), the concepts/worksheets have gotten a bit tougher, and we have taken 2 days per lesson when needed. We work on this every day (with occasional breaks), so we complete about 4 lessons per week. At that rate, I guess we'll finish in 7 or 8 weeks. I'm happy to have other time in the school year to work on writing skills.

I was under the impression that the author intended one to do a worksheet a week, practicing a little bit each day (4 sentences/day). This is what I did, and I feel that at this pace, my daughter retained the material rather than whizzing right through it. The daily practice is good, yet not tedious.

If you need more practice there is a supplemental workbook. I used this at times when the concepts were more complicated and I wanted to spend more than a 3-4 days on a concept.

Yes, I agree, I am also under the impression that the author intended Winston 1 to be a year program. But, we did it in about 2 months.

We did:
- Winston Basic for gr. 4-5
- Winston Word Works for gr. 6
- Winston Advanced for gr. 7-8

We did it 2-3x/week, for 5-10 min/session. We'd go over the concept from the teacher manual, then I'd write 4 sentences on the whiteboard, the child would then mark the sentence (or do it orally), so we'd go over 1 lesson a week -- but, often backing up and reviewing after a long break from school, and not doing it for the first 3 and last 3 weeks of school. In this way, we would get 2/3rds through the program in the first year, and then review and finish it in the second year.

Going so slowly and gently allowed us to have plenty of time to learn other grammar concepts from other programs; to really absorb the concepts (the noun functions in Winston Basic, and the gerunds/participles/etc. in the Advanced), with lots of review.

At various times we have used Write Source workbooks; Editor in Chief workbooks; or Take Five Minutes: A History Fact a Day to practice punctuation/capitalization, etc.

Plus, 1-2 times a week I would make up a Sonlight-type of dictation worksheet for grammar practice.

Best of luck in finding the grammar that fits your family best! Warmly, Lori D.
