I don't know if this is already on a recommended list...but I thought I would pass it on.
I read "Boy in the Striped Pajamas" to my almost-9 y o son this week as we are studying through WW2. We'd seen the movie a month or so ago. I found it better than the movie, more "protected" at the end...giving a gentle treatment of suffering so that, as a parent/teacher I could choose how much information to be specific about, and what to skip. We had tears and a long discussion at the end and I believe it did more than any texts we could have read through this week, to bring him the limited amount of understanding I want him to have at this point.
Anyway, I just wanted to post it b/c I found it a superb book for, I would say, 9+. I would, of course, recommend a pre-read on your behalf, to be able to anticipate questions that might arise.
