My dd is a Junior and does not have much experience using a computer. She writes emails, and uses the internet and Rosetta Stone, but she's a bit computer-phobic. For instance, she'd rather write out all of her essays in cursive than use Word.

I'd like for her to learn at least the following next year:

- Typing, ideally to about 50-60 WPM (is that a good speed?)
- File and email Management (organization)
- MS Word & Excel, enough to organize data and create papers for college, but not be an expert - lower-middle-level knowledge, maybe?
- Anything else that I'm leaving out?

What do you recommend for learning these skills?

Thanks so much!

I would also include Power Point since she'll use it for all kinds of presentations both for class & jobs or clubs. Here they call the class Business Systems Technology or at the cc Intro to computer (which everyone has to take.) I imagine there are on-line options or check your local college. HTH!

Thanks for the tips to include PowerPoint and to look at CC offerings. I looked at our Virginia CC courses, and after considering, we'll probably do the following:

1. Install Microsoft Office 2007 on her computer

2. Have her study and use what's in one or both of these books:

Office 2007 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies by Peter Weverka, ISBN 0471782793

Office 2007 for Dummies by Wallace Wang, ISBN 0470009233

If anyone has a better idea, please let me know!

Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory Concepts and Techniques, Windows XP Edition (Paperback)
by Gary B. Shelly; Thomas J. Cashman; Misty E. Vermaat (Author)

We found a used copy at Amazon. It covers the things you are looking at with exercises to practice the concepts learned.
