How does the "new posts" function work?

This is a two part question - how do I access the new posts, and how will viewing the new posts allow me to use my time on the boards more efficiently?

Right now I scan the boards t teh end of each day, and subscribe to the threads that interest me. I also have my browser ( I think that's the right term : ) set to automatically subscribe to threads when I post in them.

However, I find that as I scan the boards, posts I have previously seen, which now have new posts added, pop back up to the top again so I end up seeing the same posts multiple times. Is there a more efficient way to do this?

I haven't figured out an efficient way to go through the boards either. The new post display is dynamic, and I end up looking at the same things over and over again.

I hope a board expert will reply and enlighten us!
