Well, it's the end of the year and it's time for my annual curriculum freak out!

:willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

I've thrown in the towel on Winterpromise's Hideaways in History. It's just too much for us. In fact, I think we'll have to wait a bit to get the most out of SOTW. The kids like it, but it does tend to be over their heads. Sooo, I spent the morning going through my older versions of SL 1 and 2 and putting the history books in chronological order, culling the ones I don't want to read and getting ready to go in January. I think the old Usborne World History book and Gombrich's Little History are more appropriate for us. I haven't given up the hope of doing SOTW, but I think we'll have to do it in a couple of years. After Core K, I needed a SL break, but I guess the grass isn't greener after all, and we're back. Of course, by the time I get done with a SL Core, it doesn't look much like a SL Core :D.

On the LA front, it's time to take a break from LLATL Red. I knew that we would pause when we got about 2/3 of the way through and pick up the "getting ready for 3rd grade" lessons in the summer. After going through SL's LA 2, Pathway readers 2 and WP's first grade, the winner is WP! I'm a bit annoyed that they call this program 1st grade because all of the resources are listed as 2nd grade books, but I'll get over it :glare:. I really like the looks of Right into Reading 2 and I think ds is ready for the challenge of reading levelled readers that have lots of unfamiliar words. We'll be adding in WWE1 and either R&S 2 or FLL1/2, but I'm still undecided. I like R&S's layout but the religious content is very heavy and I'm not sure I can do it everyday for 150 days, KWIM? At least dd is easy. She loves cutting and pasting and will love LLATL Blue!

Math for ds is topsy-turvy too. I bought MUS alpha to see if the blocks would help him get a better understanding of math, but I'm not entirely sure if it's a winner yet or not. We still have R&S 2 and we could certainly continue that, but I'm not sure which is better, memorizing the facts but lacking a deeper understanding, or seeing math more clearly, but fumbling with actually spitting out the answer. In the end, I think it's just a readiness thing and math facts will eventually become cemented in his brain. I just need to be patient. Dd is doing well with R&S 1, but she likes to play with the MUS blocks so I think I'll combine them for her.

At least science is taken care of, in fact we're doing a lot of science between our weekly class and our monthly museum classes. Plus, my kids are big fans of Sid the Science Kid, who's turned out to be a worthy successor to Ms. Frizzle.

Well, thanks for reading my yearly curriculum cri du coeur! Any comments or commiseration would be greatly appreciated.

:iagree: Right there with you!!! What's wrong w/ us???

If you've read any of my posts from the past few days you'd know I'm dealing w/ it too!

But, such is life. I hope you decide on what works for you guys. I didn't like the looks of HIH, so I chose AW. I am really enjoying it....(cough, cough,) I mean my kids are really enjoying it:D

The only thing I'm changing for January is:
-we're switching Rock Around the Earth to something else (God's Design maybe??)
-I'm going to begin using IEW again instead of WP's writing.

Everything else seems to be going well. We're having fun this year!

I'm in the same position. I usually reevaluate things in January, but this month I hit a wall and panicked. I will be happy to start the new year out with some changes already made, though. :)

I really enjoyed reading about your changes. I already freaked out and am back to being happy. :) I ended up going back to my initial plans.

What is it with this time of year? This is generally freak out time for me too. :001_huh:

And fwiw, my ds (then 6 now 8) loved WP's LA. It's when his reading took off. The advanced nature bugged me as well, but as long as he didn't know it was a "below grade-level". (Which, of course, it wasn't. ;))

I always re-vamp for January, too, ugh.

or, well.... I added more. :001_smile: We just streamlined by adding Sonlight 3+4. We have always read out loud at night and my last few picks have bombed. Well, after some research I realized I was picking good books that were way above my kids' levels. They were all in Sonlight, just in later cores. So I bought a cheap IG and got the books and we are now really enjoying read aloud time!

I also have added some used MUS to my Life of Fred. I decided that LOF is really awesome, but one ds could stand to fiddle with blocks and fraction overlays once in a while. I only paid a little for the older version and it is going well.

Re-vamping is fun, albeit expensive sometimes. I could have saved thousands by actually seeing things first---the only drawback to internet shopping for me.

Right there with you. :D

Actually, I'm not changing anything my oldest is using and my middle two are sticking with SL for history. We're also continuing with WWE.

But I have Rod and Staff English here and might switch ds8 to that. I wasn't sure when I wanted to start grammar, but he is a memorizing machine and I want to take advantage of it while he's in this stage; plus, he's doing Serl's PLL right now which is a lovely program but we're only utilizing 1/3 of it at this point and a lot of it is oral and ds is not an auditory learner. I have actually looked at WP LA myself because my son likes workbooks a lot, but I'm not sure I want to buy so many consumables. Still thinking about it.

We're also going to start RightStart Math with him. And we're all (three youngest) supposed to start NOEO science, but we'll see if we can work it in. They've been learning a lot with books we have around the house and Bill Nye and Magic School Bus videos and I don't worry about science that much until closer to logic stage.

Have you noticed they use Easy Grammar?

I've decided that it makes me a better Mom and teacher because I'm always willing to change what I need to for my children, regardless of cost, effort, or what has seemed to work for others. (If you believe that, you're in more denial than me)

I'm still procrastinating trying to figure out what to use for writing after the first of the year. However, instead of running around willy nilly, I prefer to sit in my pjs, on the computer, on the boards, procrastinating and drinking coffee. SIGH I'll get to it January first. After my coffee:D

I've only looked at LA 2 and LA 3 so I hadn't noticed that. I don't think I'd stick with WP LA all the way through. Is Easy Grammar not consumable?

It has been compared to Analytical Grammar. WP uses it starting in 5th grade, I think. That was the LA I was most interested in, as we have FLL 4 and then Analytical Grammar in 6th, and I was looking for something to fill in the one year gap.

Anyway... I found that Easy Grammar (and WP) does not teach diagramming until 8th grade, so it was something to consider.

I am having a hard time with Winter Promise Hideaways in History too. I feel my older two got way more out of SOTW and Biblioplan ancients when they were in 1st and 3rd grade than my ds is getting from this history now. The worst part is, I spent so much money on it compared to what I spent on SOTW and Biblioplan combined. I thought he would really like this because of the hideaway projects but we have found it is impossible to aquire the boxes and I refuse to spend 100 dollars for cardboard boxes. We have had to improvise or just skip the hideaweay altogether. Very disappointing. I am still trying to muddle through it however but ds isn't very plugged in.

I also had the same issue with the R&S math 2nd VS Saxon. Trying to figure out a way to combine those and have the best of both worlds.
