I am currently using BRI that Ottakee recommended to me with my ds7 who is struggling to learn to read. He is doing great with them. We are on book 30 and I couldn't be happier. Since we are getting close to the end of the books I have I am trying to decide if I want to continue on with these or move on the something else. I was really looking at ABeCeDarian I think it looks great and it's one I could afford. Someone else mentioned on another thread the following reading programs so I'm wondering which one would work best for us. I know Barton we could never afford so that is out of the question. Any advice on the others? Thanks!
Wilsonlanguage.com (very strong on encoding/spelling as well as reading..this is what we use)
Barton (not sure how it is for encoding.....it's like the others for decoding except that it has the HUGE benefit of being scripted. totally scripted so it's open and go)
Recipe for Reading (much like Wilson)
HEC Horizons for Reading (great computer based program mostly for decoding....not very strong for encoding....you'd use All About Spelling or Wilson for the encoding part)

We started Barton a few weeks ago so I'm not an expert at all, but there is a great yahoo group called Heart of Reading that you might want to check out. Many of the moms on there use Barton and you can find lots of good info.

If you're already using Wilson, I'd just stick with it, especially through Step 2. Once you're beyond step 2, you can keep going, or it is easier to switch.

The following info was in her post, but I wrote it in another thread

How's he doing with BRI? If he's doing great and you're thrilled, I think ABeCeDarian would be too elementary. And there is a HUGE gap between B2 and C. Huge.
What are you trying to accomplish? Spelling? Multisyllable words? What level is he at with the BRI (not number, but actual skills).
:)

We are almost done with BRI 2. He is doing really well. We are still working a bit on confusion with words like sell, and shell but he is making progress. Skill wise I would say he is right on target for the book that we are on, they are almost getting easy for him. He is developing some fluency which was non-exsistent before. I'm hoping just to keep him moving along with the great progress he is making. Soon I will have to buy something because we are almost through with BRI 2. I thought it would be a good time to see if there is something out there that would work and that I could use with my dd9 who is reading well but still needs some instruction on multisyllable words.

I wish I had all of the answers. I'm currently using Wilson with my dd9.5 who 8 mos ago was reading at about a first grade level. Now she's reading most things (when forced;p) and stumbling over multisyllabic things, but getting them with enough assistance from me (ie assistance breaking down the syllables).
She's getting very very irritated wtih the stilted decodable language of Wilson....which I understand. It's not normal prosody and is uncomfortable to listen to.
So....I'm speeding through Wilson....even though technically we should still be on step 3.something since she's not decoding the multisyllable words 100% of the time correctly.
1)I've ordered REWARDS! (whichever is the first one.....secondary? intermediate?) since that focuses on multisyllabic words and has more interesting text.
2)I've ordered HEC Reading Horizons for home (10-adult)...the CD-Rom. We'll be skipping a bunch but really....sometimes *any* and all instruction is good if it doesn't come from me;p
3)Ordered Megawords. I'm not sure if we'll use it or not. Her vocab is adult level.....we'll see.
4)Considering AAS if we don't use megawords. or we might continue with the encoding portion of Wilson. However, sometimes we just need to move on. She needs change more often than I'd like;p
Just some info on what we're doing....no real helpful info on what you should do:)
I started ISS/3R's with my 7 yo who is also slightly dyslexic. She suddenly took off and I'm not ordering the next levels. Giving her minimal Wilson - basically a five minute here's-how-this-sounds - then letting her go to it. She's willingly reading both silently and aloud so my concerns for her are evaporating. She's also doing the Wilson workbooks. Odd kid. She loves workbooks;p

You are NOT almost done with the BRI books. http://www.roadstoeverywhere.com/3RsPlusRead.html or www.iseesam.com both sell the next sets. There are 6 more sets of the books. These will take him through mid/end of 3rd grade.
I would HIGHLY encourage you to keep going with the books. Once you get through sets 3 and 4 (or ARI 1 &2 as they are also called) you will have a child well on their way to reading well. Once you are done with the books you can resell them as well and get much of your money back on them. Your 9dd could read them as well.
When you are done with the 3rd or 4th set of the BRI books, start Apples and Pears Spelling. http://www.prometheantrust.org/soundfoundationsbooks.htm It is WONDERFUL for teaching spelling and writing from dictation.
Gogether these would get you through all of the decoding you need and spelling to a 4th or 5th grade level (or even more)
