I posted this on the general board, also, but not getting much response over there...

We are doing very, very basic handwriting right now. We're going the R&S Readiness book "C" where ds is learning to write numbers. This is the first time that we are encountering the lines to write on; don't know what they're called but look like this:

___________________________________________
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ _
___________________________________________

My question is what should I be referring to each line as? I am greatly confusing the poor kid - I told him I'd tell them what they were all called tomorrow! I can picture the little house from when I did abeka myself, but we aren't planning on using abeka for handwriting, so I'm not sure what the rest of the world calls everything. FYI - we are planning on using A Reason for Handwriting, but that could change, so if you know what they call it that would be great, but I'd love to hear the rest, too.

Thanks!

Ok, according to my getty & dubay
From the very top
Ascender
waistline -the dotted one
baseline
descender line-nothing sits on this but say a g goes down to half way between the baseline and the descender

My daughter uses the three lined handwriting paper. On her paper the bottom line is red.
Here's what I call the lines:

the top line
the dotted middle line
the red base line.

______________
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
______________
______________

Top line or Top Guide Line
Dotted Mid-line or Dashed Middle Line
Base line or Bottom Line

The House:
Attic = area between mid-line and top guide line
Main Floor = area between the base line and the mid-line
Basement = anything below the base line... for letters with tails
(On the white board, I draw a red line under and parallel to the base line so that the tails don't go to the center of the earth, IYKWIM.)
