Hello....I've just purchased the entire 7th grade Abeka! It is almost all brand new, barely used from a mom who had used their video program and she sold it to me for about 1/5 of what it cost! I'd like to give it a try, but since there are no curriculum guides I was wondering if someone could please tell me if they are absolutely essential to every subject? The Spelling seems pretty easy to go it alone, but what about the rest? The English, Science, History, and Math? I'm not concerned about Reading because we're doing CLE and are totally happy with it! My main concerns are English, Science, and Math for obvious reasons. Nothing against History, but my dc is going into a Science field and really, really loathes History. Also, would Abeka at this grade level be a great fit for an independent learner? Thanks so very much! Have a blessed day!
Sincerely,

I had Abeka 7th grade materials once... a looong time ago :D
For the most part, the textbooks are read & answer the questions, do a project at the end of the book. Especially History & Science. If you want to add to science, the curriculum guide might be a help -- it would be nice if you could see it first, though (they do mini-shows at local hotels in areas, maybe there will be one close to you?).
I'd say the teacher's guide for Grammar would be helpful (some of the grammar exercises can get time consuming to figure out the answer, so having the answers would be very helpful).
Spelling/Vocabulary is pretty simple. Honestly, with that, the assignments we were given were things like: Write the definition of each word, and a sentence to show you know what the word means and how it's used. A pre-test, with extra written work to practice words you didn't spell correctly, and what was actually in the booklet. But I wouldn't need a teacher's guide (or curriculum guide) for that.
I really haven't had a need for most of the curriculum guides myself (but then, I've been doing mostly lower elementary --we've been fine just doing the next page type of assignment. They might be helpful in Jr./Sr. high, but I'd have to see them.

sorry, I can't really be a lot of help here. We used the 7th grade with the DvDs (our only year to do so). DD really liked it. It was just a different year for us and was really nice.
I can tell you that I have a friend that bought the 8th grade (no dvds) this year and has struggled with it and doesn't like it at all.
But I'm sure it depends on the student, the family, the situation, etc.

Did your purchase come with the Teacher Manuals? The guides aren't necessary, in fact A Beka sells the curriculum without the DVD program. We are using it with the Video guides, but they aren't necessary unless you're using the DVDs. We did 7th grade in the standard text program..
The Grammar and Comp does flip back and forth in the book in both formats alternating between grammar and composition exercises. Spelling, Science, Math, and History progress in the standard lesson format. (IE..Do the next page, exercise, lesson etc.)

I do have all the teacher's manuals, keys, etc......it's just the curriculum/lesson plans that I'm wondering if I really need. I am not too strong in Math or Science, guess I should've mentioned that if it helps at all! Thanks again ladies...this board rocks!!!
