Any curriculum recommendations for reading comprehension? My 9-year-old daughter can put together a fine narration. But she has trouble understanding the comprehension questions that appear in curriculum.

We are almost done with the Critical Thinking Reading Detective. It was ... OK. I didn't think the stories were all that well-written and I thought some of the questions were silly or confusing.

I'm not looking for something to do every day...just a once or twice a week blurb for her to read and respond to, for testing practice. I'd love to find something that uses classic literature and not bizarro stories with confusing pronouns:)

You could try Abeka -- Read & Think Skill Sheets (they begin at grade three), they also have an "Adventures" series, which is a short story, followed by questions. Both of these tackle reading speed along with comprehension.

I would recommend McCall-Crabbs Standard Test Lessons In Reading: Books A-E found here: http://www.bhibooks.net/catalog/item/4154960/4106148.htm

There is also an answer key: http://www.bhibooks.net/catalog/item/4154960/4106161.htm

I think this set is also available at Rainbow Resource.

There are other McCall-Crabbs books available, but this one is the best edition out there. The other books have been edited and watered down. Each book has 78 lessons; the child is given 3 minutes to read an paragraph and answer questions (usually about 10). You can use it as often as you like. I've seen significant improvement with reading comprehension in my boys not only in their school work, but also on standardized tests.

HTH!

We use MCP's Comprhension Plus. (Levels B and D presently). We had good luck with their Phonics series, and their Spelling Workout, so I decided to try this. It's not bad. Same layout as their other workbooks. Each lesson focuses on a different topic, then moves on to a different topic next lesson. It's a nice introduction to what elements they are supposed to be paying attention to when they are reading a passage.
