It would go with our historical period but I'm not sure what age it's for! Thanks!

My TruthQuest guide lists it as 4th-12th. It could certainly be a read aloud for a 9yo. I skipped it last year because I thought there was too much romance surrounding the main female character. We read Mary Jemison: Seneca Captive by Gardner instead. HTH

It's mostly a romance, and it might mostly go over her head at age 8.
It raises some very interesting questions about racism, conflicting views of various Christian faiths, taking positions in armed conflicts, etc. I enjoyed discussing it with my 11 YO last year.

to avoid the romance and until we can have the good discussions on the topics you mentioned. I had a feeling it seemed a little old. Thanks again!

We used Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison by Lois Lenski for our read aloud when we got to this. My 11 yo daughter read Calico Captive to herself. I did not read it at all. The whole family liked Indian Captive.
