Chinese classes?

My 8th grader ds wants to study Chinese next year. Does anyone know of an on-line or correspondence course with a speaking component? Needless to say I don't know any Chinese and I don't think my ds would do well in the Berlitz total immersion method.

added: I just found the classes offered by the Michigan Virtual School. Has anyone had any experience with them? I'm still interested in other options.

This website (http://www.livemocha.com) offers free language lessons similar to Rosetta Stone. It looks like Mandarin Chinese is included.

Chinese 1 and 2, but the tuiton for out-of-staters is probably about $800 per course. Dd is about to complete Chinese 1.

that is a weekly class mostly directed at chinese-american children. My ds (tenth grade) is taking class with them and is making some progress. HTH.
