Hey, I am tagging on to an early post -- mostly because I am banging my head against a wall repeatedly lately over this. You mention visual clues -- like what? From the picture book? What kind of books? I am out of the picture book league.

My DS8 has no CLUE about the W questions, cannot (wont?) follow written direction correctly, and cannot remember what happened in one small paragraph. Some days it seems like everything disapears in his * head!

I like the picture book idea. My issue (I know, what an issue!) is that my DS read about 3 yo -- at the same time he spoke his first sentences. Hyperlexia. Its hard for me to seperate his "reading" at grade level and his understanding of his reading. Its probably the same.

How we do it:

There are small picture cards with 'who', 'where', 'when', 'what happened'. These have both the actual words, and also a small picture, for example the where card has a signpost with a question mark.

We will read (can be dd doing the reading, me or shared) a sentence or two from a simple book. At the moment we are tying this in with her readers so are using Sonlight I Can Read It books. Then I ask a question, showing the appropriate picture card, based on what has just been read.

This seems to help by focusing attention on a particular aspect but it is still not easy and sometimes I wonder whether we are talking about the same book! Sometimes I even ask the question before we start reading so that she has an idea of what to look out for.

I know that we have a big problem due to her delay in receptive speech, but the ability to pull information from what you have read seems to be a tough area for a lot of other children at this age also.

Hope that helps
