I was working with ds1 in his math workbook today and we had a page with five hats and four umbrellas, and he was supposed to color the set that had more. He scribbled over all the hats with a writing pencil and went on to the next page. This one also had two sets of objects but he was supposed to color the set that had less. He completes this exercise in a similar manner and is ready to move on. (Ds1 is very artistic when he wants to be, but in this case he was completely product oriented.) I just think it is funny because I used to dread these kind of assignments with dd. She would spend half an hour choosing just the right colors for the hats, meticulously fill in the lines, and probably decorate the page with little flowers, in the end turning her math worksheet into an artistic masterpiece. Ds1 wouldn't even stop to pick up a crayon :D

My dd who dreads her math will draw all sorts of fabulous things all over when I think she's doing her math. I have 2 boys who'd rather die than color and one who loves to color. He has to copy all the Singapore cartoons that show through on the page before. My youngest who is 6 does this in phonics too. The idea of coloring things in is ridiculous to him. Both my non colorers don't exactly love workbooks. They'd rather find some way to do mathematical wrestling or something that involves standing on your head and computing. Maybe we should take a poll and see who has kids who want to do their math under the table, or upside down, or running circles and tormenting younger siblings at the same time.

Probably not a boy vs girl thing...more like a temperament thing. 5 girls here and only one meticulous colorer (is that a word?). Until Mia came along, I never understood all those coloring assignments in TWTM. I thought all kids loathed coloring :)
Have you ever done any dabbling with Myers/Briggs personality typing? Here's a really cool questionnaire geared toward kids. It's a lot of fun to gain insight on what makes them tick: http://www.personalitypage.com/cgi-local/build_pqk.cgi

Oh, that's familiar. My daughter will draw every number on the math worksheet in some special way, color them all in, add sparkles, and then fill in with flowers and fairies and whatnot. By the time she's done you can't read the answers. Yep, it always took her forever to color in the little umbrellas!
Then I go to teach Sunday School to 5yos, and I bring them a lovely coloring picture, and some of them don't want to color! I don't know how to handle it! :o
