My 14 year old has been recently been given a complete battery of tests, and we are waiting for her results.
I feel sure that Asperger's will be one diagnosis, but I don't feel like that alone explains the trouble she has in some areas of her schoolwork.
She almost exactly fits the description for NVLD. She has the physical clumsiness with no sense of direction as well as problems with social interactions. She was a very early reader, and continues to be very advanced in all areas of language. The physiologist testing her did tell me that dd has almost no short term memory. She said the deficiency in that area was "profound".
Dd can understand complex math concepts, but can not do simple addition without mistakes. I don't think that an Asperger's label alone addresses her academic problems, so I'm pushing them to explore whether she could have both AS and NVLD.
The only question I have is about Dd's ability to draw. She is an excellent artist. She can copy anything, but also has her own style which her art teacher told me is unusual for her age. Would an ability to draw make a NVLD diagnosis unlikely?
