My MIL is getting DS (7) a cheapie microscope for Christmas. We will probably start studying biology in a few months, once we finish up the rest of our space stuff. Any tips on what slides to get? They'll be mostly for play, but if there are any that are perfect for incorporating into elementary biology, we'd love that.

Thanks.

For that age, I like to make my own. Iodine can be used for staining. Among other things, we examined cheek cells, hair, onion skin, yeast, pond water, spores, algae, raw turkey juice left to sit out for a couple of days, fingerprints, and blood. Janice VanCleave has a wonderful age-appropriate microscope book (http://www.amazon.com/Janice-VanCleaves-Microscopes-Magnifying-Lenses/dp/047158956X/). This Usborne book (http://www.amazon.com/Microscope-Science-Experiments-Corinne-Stockley/dp/0746002890/) is another good one for younger kids.

I would like to make my own, and am wondering where to buy the unprepared slides...........Carolina (http://www.carolina.com/) carries them, but I'll but most scientific supply companies do. You need slides and coverslips.

I'm going to look for the Janice VanCleave book, Moira. We love her around here! Thanks so much for everyone's input.

Also, just for anyone who saw that I was 'banned' . . . I made a stupid mistake last night when I came here to post the question. :blushing: I used to visit here a lot before the board change. After the board changed I didn't come much. It had been months since I had been here. I totally forgot that I had already registered an account and registered another. That was a no-no & I got banned. Our kind webmaster re-instated me once I explained my mistake, though. I promise, I'm not some big trouble-maker! :D
