number recognition, getting familiar with the blocks, shapes, basic addition and subtraction, skip counting, tally marks, telling time....

Primer is the only book that it is not necessary to master. Primer was created to be a fun introduction to math topics, mostly for those little sisters and brothers who are not quite ready for Alpha but demanding their own "math movie" as my dd put it at the age of 4. It is a completely unnecessary book and my dd breezed through it in a matter of months. She just loved it! Since the stated purpose of Primer is to get get enjoying math concepts I must say that it worked for this child. She does math for entertainment

Everything in Primer is covered in Alpha and Beta except basic counting and number recognition. Primer is great for keeping a 4 yo busy but if your child is at least 5 and has a good grasp on pre-math concepts just use Alpha.

ok, so that was way more than you asked for..... but I guessed you were trying to decide what level to get.
