My youngest is in private school this year. They're using Houghton Mifflin English for English/grammar. She has a grammar test today, so any responses I get here may be too late for me to help her, but I have a question about transitive and intransitive verbs. This will be covered on her test.
I understand that transitive verbs take direct objects, and intransitive verbs take indirect objects. However, her teacher gave her a list of prepositions after verbs which indicate that a certain verb is intransitive in that sentence. I looked up transitive and intransitive verbs in Abeka grammar, which we own, and was dissatisfied with their explanations and examples. They merely said what I already know.
So---this left me wondering: does R&S do a better job explaining transitive/intransitive verbs? Does R&S give a list of prepositions used after verbs which would indicate whether a verb is intransitive in a particular sentence?
If anyone finds anything, can you let me know? I'd like to be able to help her further with this. Also, please let me know which year of R&S you're using, OK?
Thank you in advance!
