I fear this will get buried. I had originally started a thread re: the Greenleaf Guides for the Famous Men series and another poster asked about a comparison between the Greenleaf Guides and Memoria Press Guides for these books. I would like to know this, too! Thanks! :)

I can chime in here about the Greenleaf guides. The target audience is a multi-aged group. Each lesson includes the reading assignment from the Famous Men series as well as some supplementary books (where appropriate), a vocabulary list with pronunciation, and questions. The guides are designed to be used primarily by the parent so there isn't really room to write answers in them. There also isn't an answer key.

The Memoria Press guides are much more work-booky, though there is usually more of an "answer in a paragraph" question at the end of each lesson. The teacher's guide is a key. The Greenleaf guides probably require deeper thinking and often require the student to address the character of the person being studied. However, they are much more open-ended and there is NO key.

So, it depends on what you want. MP is more (thought not completely) just the facts and could be done fairly independently, whereas Greenleaf is more discussion-oriented and would not be effective independently (IMO).

For fact retention, I think the MP guides are better (there are periodic reviews as well). For thinking, I think the Greenleaf guides are better. If I had my "'druthers" I would prefer Greenleaf but WITH an answer key. However, if you read the Famous Men Aloud together they are better. If you want your dc to do it on his own, go for MP.

HTH!

We don't always get to answer our own questions do we?:lol:

Thanks, actually that was very helpful to me as well.

Thank you for taking the time to answer this yourself! After figuring out the differences between the Famous Men of...books, I had the exact same question about the guides. Your thoughts were very helpful and matched the sense that I was getting from the descriptions of the guides elsewhere.

Still not sure which I will prefer, but that's a question only I can answer. ;)
