What did you think of it? Likes, dislikes? I'm considering doing this for the 2nd half of the year. Is it well laid out or do I need to do a lot of planning beyond just doing another chapter?

Thanks!

My 3rd grader is using Adventures with Atoms and Molecules. She does it almost entirely on her own. I like that the experiments use things that I REALLY have at home. She does an experiment and write-up as described in the WTM each week. She says that science is one of her favorite subjects, along with history.

Adventures with Atoms and Molecules is an "open and go" kind of book. The experiments are very simple but foundational. There is essentially no planning required at all. The materials needed are easy to locate. We almost always have what we need at hand in the house somewhere. My nine year old can easily read the text that accompanies the experiments. I do them with him so we can talk about what is happening and why, but he could do it on his own. He does often repeat the experiments on his own. My six year old really enjoys the experiements, also.

We've never used Fizz, Bubble & Flash.

Another vote for Adventures in Atoms and Molecules, for the same reasons as the other posters said. I learned more chemistry that year than in my high school class.

I've been using the Fizz, Bubble, and Flash book with a 2nd-3rd grade co-op class for a 6 week study of the Periodic Table (this book could provide many more lessons but I just have time for 6 from this book). We spent the prior 6 weeks doing other Chemistry study using Hands-On Chemistry experiment book from Carson Dellosa. I think the Fizz book does a good job of explaining the Periodic Table and looking at the families of elements/specific elements in a fun way. My class has enjoyed the experiments in the Fizz book so much!

I'm going to look into using Adventures in Atoms and Molecules at home after reading some of the reviews for that.

We had fun. We learned a lot. Science was always in the kitchen and everything we needed to make amazing scientific discoveries was usually in there readily available. We pretty well followed the WTM approach as well and it was great.

They are both great books and I'm a biochemistry major. I'm currently writing plans that will use both books for a year long chemistry course and I've been very impressed.

FYI, I believe that both of these books are used in Noeo Chemistry II. If you are looking for help and/or a schedule, or with "boxed" experiments, you might try here
