I have my eye on PLL for next year when my son is on second grade.

Questions:
1. How long does it take to finish all PLL if we were to use every lesson ? When do you start, when do you finish ? How do you space it out (3x/week, 2x/week) ?

2. Apart from updated pictures and poems, is there any more update with the HIllside edition of PLL ? Does it modernize story setting and spelling (e.g. today isntead of to-day, tomorrow instead of to-morrow) ? Does it expand the book with more explanation/instruction ?

3. Anybody use Lost Classic Book edition of PLL together with the TM ? YOur thought ? Is the TM worth having ? Does it offer more explanation ? THe PLL itself, is it updated in terms of spelling, story setting,e tc ?

4. Do you supplement PLL ? I'm planning to only use PLL and SWR for 2nd and 3rd grade language art, plus of course graded reader (using FREE old reader from googlebooks). We will also do oral narration across curricula. I suppose it should be enough, shouldn't it ?

Thanks

We use it 4x a week b/c some of the lessons are short. There are times that I allow a lesson to be over 2 days though, esp. the writing assignments.

Yes, Hillside uses today instead of to-day. THere is a free pdf file at Hillside's website for teachers. I'm unsure if there is more instruction within Hillside PLL vs. Original Serl PLL. I know Lost Classics provides a teacher's manual which provides more than enough help- sometimes too much in my opinion-based on what I've seen through online samples.

I use Grammar Tales (http://rainbowresource.com/product/Grammar+Tales+10-Book+Set/035303/1227282584-864307) or other picture books to supplement learning about parts of speech and usage. I also use Writing Aids (from Tapestry of Grace) as a reference for me or for other teaching suggestions. It wouldn't hurt to have a resource for LA games. I'm not saying it's needed but it works for my dd8.

We will use Writing Tales 1 after PLL but before we start ILL b/c I really want to focus on writing paragraphs for a while, I could do that with Writing Aids but I bought Writing Tales before Writing Aids. ;) I'm sorry if that's confusing.

What do you mean by writing paragraph ? Do you mean writing longer stories or narrative with paragraphs ?

We used the older edition of PLL. I did it 2X a week in 2nd grade and 3X a week in 3rd grade. One thing I wish in retrospect is that I had done a bit more teaching with the copywork/dictation portions in regards to capturing some of those capitalization and punctuation rules. I think my kids would have retained more long-term. They seemed to remember it just for that lesson. Now we are going back over some of those through dictation & copywork, and my kids are making their own log of rules and it's sticking more. I am being more intentional in my teaching, if that makes sense. Overall we enjoyed it though!

I intend to do everything in PLL, including poetry memorization. We're going to do spelling with SWR also, so that can be used to reinforce writing mechanics.

Merry, do you use any TM for PLL at all ? Is it easy to teach ?

Do you supplement with anything ?

I am using PLL with my 3rd and 2nd grader this year. I have planned for my 3rd grader to complete it in one year, so we do it almost every day. (I divided the number of lessons by how many weeks we do school.) For now, my 2nd grade son is on the same lesson. If he needs to I will separate him, but for how he's moving along just fine. So, at this rate, he will finish by the end of the year.

Next year, I do plan on having my dc use Writing Tales along side ILL. This year, nothing extra.

If you plan to use PLL in 2nd and 3rd grade then you could do lessons 3x a week.

I am using the Hillside Edition, I don't think that there are any "teacher helps" included... I haven't found a moment where I need any explanation though. It's pretty straightforward. And as Jessica mentioned there is a free PDF download to an answer key.

By writing paragraphs, being able to order her thoughts on paper and have proper form no matter what style of writing it is.
