My ds is in 4th grade--we only on lesson 16 of Saxon 5/4. He does very well if he works slowly and stopping occassionally to practice things he struggles with. But, how important is it that he finishes this book in the 4th grade?

My dd10 is doing Saxon 5/4 and we are on lesson 13, but because we had to switch programs a few weeks back. We do a math lesson every day, plus some Saturdays. If we keep that up, then by Dec 1st we can go down to 4 lessons per week in order to finish by June 19th, which is our last day of school. We also use the DIVE Cd which has been very helpful to my own slow working, non-math child. ;)
For me, personally, it is important that she finish this book by the end of 4th grade.

we use the DIVE CD too--he really enjoys that aspect of it. But, thank you for your reply--it helps to know I'm not the only one behind. I keep looking at the calendar and all the traveling we'll be doing over the holidays and it makes me crazy thinking how much school we will miss!

Have you tried getting out the calandar and just seeing exactly how you'll end up? You might be (pleasantly) surprised! I was thrilled, as was my daughter, that after the first week of December, 4 lessons per week is all we will have to accomplish (and that is with almost 2 weeks OFF over Christmas). I'd love to hear how your lessons come out for the year if you feel so inclined...come on, just take a peek! :)

Well, let's see: Math 54 in 5th; Math 65 in 6th; Math 76 in 7th; Math 87 in 8th; Alg. 1 in 9th; Alg. 2 in 10th; Advanced Math in 11th; Calc in 12th...*I* don't see anything wrong with that--4 yrs. of math, alg. and above, in high school, plus a credit geometry, which would actually make 5 credits of high school math...
And the problem with that would be....??

Thank you Dawne, I've been so scared to look at the calendar because I thought we were so far behind, but actually we can easily finish in June even if we keep us this snail's pace.
And Ellie, thank you for your dose of reality--since he's my oldest I don't always know what is beyond in terms of credit for hs. That was a big help!

I think you'll find that the time working thoroughly through 54 is well spent, because then he'll have good habits and a solid foundation afterwards. We found that every year after 54 went much more easily and quickly. You'll probably be able to whiz through the first third of most of the Saxon books if you've really thoroughly finished the one before. Good luck!
Just a caution, the publisher says that Advanced Math usually takes more than one year.

Ah, that's right! I forgot, but they do say that average students usually need 3-4 semesters to complete Advanced Math....so up to 2 years is very normal. :001_smile:
So back to the OP, for *us* we want to complete 5/4 in 4th grade to give us 10th and 11th grades to work on Advanced Math.
