for a dd who doesn't really like history, but is developing an interest in child labor and general working conditions. The book can't be too overwhelming.

Thanks,
Pam

He was a very talented photographer who snuck into factories and processing stations and photographed child laborers. His photos are truly works of art, and were very influential in improving the strength and enforcement of child labor laws.

There is a book about him that might be a good introduction for your daughter--it's called "Kids at Work", by Russell Freedman. It includes a lot of prints of Hines' photographs.

There is a middle school level novel about the same era that is pretty good--it's called "Counting on Grace" by Elizabeth Winthrop.

For labor issues around the Dust Bowl migrations, I know of no better source than "The Harvest Gypsies" by John Steinbeck. But that is a pretty brutal book--you might want to preread. It is short and extremely well-written. The material is part of the basis for "The Grapes of Wrath."

This may be too young for your daughter, but Katherine Paterson's novel Lyddie is a look at the life of a mill girl. Here (http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/ALAN/spring94/Zaidman.html) is an essay on it.

And further links on child labor laws here (http://www.edu.pe.ca/birchwood/lyddie/links.htm).
