I haven't seen much on these forums about BJU algebra 1. I was given a set of books, but don't want to start this program if it's not the best for dd. I had been planning to do Foresters based on the feedback on these boards.
Anyone have experience with BJU? Is it a solid program? Did your kids do well in higher math levels and testing?

Thanks!!!!:001_smile:

I've used BJU Algebra with one child and am using pre-algebra this yr with another. I very much like it. It moves at just the right pace and has very good explanations. We never got stuck. I supplemented with videos from Dr. Burger from www.hotmath.com.

I'm using Foerster's Algebra & Trig with oldest dd now. I had heard complaints about BJU algebra 2 so we never tried that. Foerster's requires a lot of effort on my part to be able to understand the information enough to be able teach it. I'm not saying Foerster's is not a good program, just that it's difficult for me to implement.

That is one of the things that looks positive with BJU. I like that the teacher manual is so complete. I just have heard so much about the other programs that I was concerned that BJU's upper math wasn't good. It seems like lots of people do 1-6 then switch.

I used it with my oldest, as we're big fans of BJU math for the younger years, and it was important to stay the course with this one. It was a good fit for her, because each lesson is broken down nicely. It does require a good bit of teaching - which is one reason it's not used more in high school. I had to be up on my game, iykwim.

The only BJU math I've heard negative reviews about is the Precalculus (vague examples). My inquiries of their algebra text were consistently met with the answer 'solid' here on the board.

We used BJU Pre-algebra and it was very adequate. The only reason I didn't continue on with the BJU Algebra was I was not secure enough in my knowledge to help dd in the case she got stuck. The student text can be done independently but the TM is there if needed.

but we did not think too highly of their Geometry either, although we used it with Homesat. It was a necessity for us, because that was the year my FIL, whom I was caring for, passed on after much illness. Had it been my techy kid, rather than my artsy kid, i'd have hired a tutor, but as it was she did the basics and and called it good. That said, she really enjoyed geometry as a break from algebra.

hth as you plan for the future.

We have used BJU Algebra 1 and 2. I taught my girls Algebra 1 and then used the BJU Algebra 2 DVD program so I didn't have to spend so much time preparing and teaching. The program was well done and thorough. I felt like my girls learned so much. We will be using the Geometry next. We liked it so much that my younger daughter will use it, too.
