Hi all,

I'm looking for a science curriculum that is as pick up and go as possible. I don't have access to a library and need something that comes with everything needed. My son is 7 and loves science. We tried R.E.A.L. science and it seems like it would be great, but it isn't getting done. I can't get the books needed and I feel like I'm constantly needing to run and get something to do an experiment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've glanced at Noeo, any thoughts on that?

Thanks

Noeo comes with everything, which is nice. I am not sure what topic/grade you are thinking of using it with. We used it for 5th grade biology. You can read my review here (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44557&highlight=noeo+freedom). You may want to do a search. There are a number of people who really enjoy Noeo.

Good luck!

Thanks for the review. I had been looking at it for the future but I don't think it will fit us according to your review Thanks!:)

real science 4 kids is pick up and go. We have chosen to do the labs which require pretty common household items.....I think the program is pretty good - my ds 9 likes it and I think a younger child could, too, - they would most likely focus on different aspects of it and maybe less detail. I've been happy with the chemistry which we're close to finishing. I haven't tried bio or phys yet.....

Another vote for NOEO. I wasn't sure about it and tried Chemistry I, 2 years ago when I had a pre K and 2nd grader, but it wasn't a good fit since it was also my first year hsing, and I had a lot of make up work to do in math and phonics with the 2nd grader. We are doing NOEO Bio I and it's going so great. My kids are in 4th and 1st now and have asked if we could try Chem I again next year. They really enjoyed it but I was too overwhelmed with other subjects to do it. I love that it comes with all the books you need, of course you could add more from the library if you wanted but you don't have to, and they would just be ones you found on your own as they only schedule the ones that come with the set and their isn't a extra reading list at all that I've found in mine.

My kids love the notebooking aspect of it, but once in a while we'll do a lapbook with it instead. We just finished doing the Cactus Desert unit with the One Small Square cactus desert book and I found free lapbook materials for that book on www.homeschoolshare.com (http://www.homeschoolshare.com)

We use Singapore Science, comes with test bank, workbook, activity book. Most activities can be done with items around the house, but you if you skip a demonstration it's not a big deal. The best part of this program are the very indepth questions that lead to more conversation and more books from the library, if you want. If you don't want, you just go to the next section.

Myrtle,
What levels of Singapore Science have you used? And are you recommending the MPH or the Interactive Science from Singapore?
Thanks

Thanks to everyone. It looks like Noeo will be the way to go.

MPH 5 & 6 with my oldest. He's currently in 7th grade Interactive Science.
My younger two are currently in MPH 3rd grade.

I chose MPH over Interactive Science because of the supplements that came with that program. I recall ordering interactive science at the sixth grade level just to see what it was like and I couldn't tell a difference between quality or content, just that MPH seemed to have more questions for kids to answer. I also ordered the entire MPH science curriculum from 3-6th before it went out of print so I haven't examined the most recent edition.

The disadvantage of the 7th grade science program is that there is no test bank and that answers to reviews are not available. I remedied the lack of tests by ordering "Excel in Science" a book of test papers for 7th grade science directly from Singapore at www.sgbox.com (very good service, I chose a cheap and long shipping option but it got here within two weeks rather than the 6 weeks that they estimated)

Because of the quality of the science book I would not hesitate to order more science workbooks from them. I can't say the same for the English though. However, because Singapore uses a national curriculum you can use mix and match between the different science curricula without coming across too many we-were-never-taught-that kinds of questions. I guess what I'm saying is that if interactive science doesn't offer enough practice, you could always order workbooks or tests from a different curriculum.

We use Noeo here, but I don't require as much writing. I love this program and find it easy to tweak for our needs.

I'm a non-science mom who is having success with ABeka science. You can even order kits from Homesciencetools.com if you'd like.

We're also using MPH Science. I like that it's entirely self contained and pick-up-and-go, as Science used to be our subject most likely to be skipped. I also appreciate how it is structured, building where possible on previous knowledge even between branches of science. This is not a particularly intensive program, but it is a solid overview for gr 3-6 Science.

After MPH, I'm planning two applied math/science units:

The Art of Construction: Projects and Principles for Beginning Engineers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1556520808/)
Engineering the City: How Infrastructure Works (http://www.amazon.com/Engineering-City-How-Infrastructure-Works/dp/1556524196/)

to be followed by The Elements and then Carbon Chemistry (http://www.ellenjmchenry.com/id25.html).

This is as far out as I've planned.
