Hello all! I am new here, pretty new to homeschooling, and WAY new to the idea of the classic method. I am the super proud mama of two darling little boys (well most of the time they are darling!). Up to now we have being doing a very eclectic method of homeschool...and it ain't going well. I have been researching the classical method and much to my surprise I am beginning to think that it is the way to go. So here I am!
Here is the low-down on the kiddos:

DS-6 (referred to as O) has been identified as highly gifted. He is a pretty rigid little man, he wants to memorize things, and check things off of a list. He loves to read, and is quite good at it. He HATES crafting, coloring and anything artsy (I weep!). He loves history and literature, and long walks on the beach =)

DS-5 (referred to as P) is the consummate little boy! He is a cuddler, hugger, and WIGGLER. He is reading well, and enjoys BOB books and the like. He likes to play with dinosaurs and bioncles. He WILL TOTALLY MELT DOWN if he is asked to color, but loves to write!

Since coming to the understanding that the direction I was heading our homeschool in was failing miserably I have been researching curric and find myself at a loss. Any suggestion of materials that I could use with my boys would be great!

I have my local library bringing in the Well Trained Mind book and I look forward to reading it. We live a pretty rural area and seldom get into "town" so as soon as the book is in I will get and be off!

Your boys sound delightful :)

I have a boy who doesn't like busywork either, but he enjoys Daddy's real art projects (Daddy's an artist).

I'm sure you'll glean a lot of information on this board, and we will learn as much from you as you from everyone else.

...and classical was (and is) a GREAT match for him!

No coloring required:)

My wiggly 7-year-old also loves classical.

9-year-old daughter...not so much. But we do the best we can:)

Ordinary Parents Guide To Reading for both each day
Explode the Code for both since DS5 enjoys writing, a few times per week
Spelling Workout A for DS6 daily
A Handwriting program, just a few minutes per day
Math 4 days per week (Saxon, Abeka, Singapore, etc)
Story of the World volume 1 for both a few times per week
Some good science reading together a few times per week and simple experiments now and then

My ds6 is the same way as your ds6. The classical style will work well for him.I made him a list of things we will do in school everyday. This way he knows how much school is left and he can check it off of his list. I have noticed though that he will do some history related projects fe help build a catapult as part of our Ancient Rome history.

I just found a free history curriculum that is done everyday, uses literature, has some memorization work and uses Story of the World as a spine.

Other things your dc might like: First Language Lessons, OPGTR, ETC (with writing if your ds enjoys if not skip the writing parts), and maybe Handwriting Without Tears.

You could also check out R.E.A.L. Science if they are intrested in science. It follows the classical rotation.
