We are currently using Rod and Staff. It's a bit overkill for us. I've already switched dd to writing in the book rather than all that copy work. I'm considering doing every other lesson orally.
What I am really looking for is something fun and also a writing program. I think dd is ready for a formalized writing program. I would love to get this kiddo writing more
Ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I agree with Jessica. My dd8 is in 3rd and using Writing Tales this year. She enjoys it, I enjoy it and it's fun. It has a variety of activities, grammar, writing, vocab, spelling, games, etc. And her writing's coming along very nicely.

Another vote for Writing Tales. I switched to it and my very reluctant writer (ds9) is actually writing without arguing with me this year. I am thrilled. It is the best choice we made for our homeschool. I highly recommend it.

Whitestavern - are you using WT1 or WT2 w/ your 3rd grader?
Thanks! 8-)

We started with WT1 and I think it's a perfect fit.

Just an FYI. As far as writing, they're basically "re-writing" stories in their own words. They have a chance to add creative touches in their final draft, but they're sticking to a specific story. Again, I think it's great and we love it, but I wanted to let you know the methods they use to teach.
Another book we use sometimes because it's really fun is Games for Writing. It gives my daughter an opportunity to do really creative, imaginative writing. HTH.

Have you looked at Christian Light? I've heard of the other option posted here and that's always an option, but Christian light has been just delightful for us.
It is spiral in approach and extremely thorough. My daughter has learned so much LA this year, it isn't funny, and it's just November!!!!!
I'm not kidding. She can diagram and pick out parts of speech like a pro. And there's plenty of spelling and writing exercises, IMHO.
And it isn't very expensive, similar to R&S.
You can get a light unit for about $2.90 (there are 10 for the year) and just check it out for yourself.

We are using FLL3 - actually finishing it possibly by Christmas and then probably go to FLL4. I really like FLL3. It is so easy to use, ds doesn't protest it at all. It's very gentle, but thorough. But you would still need something for writing.... I've had Writing Strands for a couple years and every time I looked at it I thought there was no way I could use it. But I handed it to ds a couple weeks ago and (only 2 weeks in) he actually *enjoys* it - amazing! I can only hope it continues!
