For those who remember those who have fought for our countries of USA & Canada, here's a special, poignant tribute. Be sure to select English or French. The heart applies to both countries, IMO. http://www.terry-kelly.com/pittance/pittance_en.htm#

Thanks, Karen. We spent a chilly morning at a Veterans Day ceremony at our local cemetery. So special. I love this country!!

Hey, that's neat! I was living in Dartmouth at the time this happened, too!

That's interesting. Do you know more about the composer?

Never heard of him before your post. I'll have to ask dh, a musician.

Thanks. I'm interested:)

Mr. Colleen in NS's reply: "He's partly blind, and is a local musician (Halifax/Dartmouth NS). I'm a guitar teacher and have taught one student one of his songs. My father told me about another of his songs called Take Me Home. He sings at local events."

I think dh knows about every local musician. :)

Thanks. One of these days I think I'll listen to some of his other songs he links.

I think musicians are like that about knowing things about other local musicians. I once chatted with one in an airport, and not only had he heard of my cousins, he told me that they were the top band (I had no idea) in the city at that time & was impressed with the guitar abilities of one of them (later on that guitarist got to teach a workshop at one of Canada's larger universities, despite not having a degree in music).

Ooooo, tell me more about the guitarist who taught a workshop! Who? Where? My dh would LOVE to hear about that - he's always wanted to get more music training, but has been playing guitar and teaching himself for.......30something years and teaching guitar for 24 or so, and as his main income for the past few years in people's homes.

He runs into other musicians all the time around here, too. Last Jan. we were at Halifax airport and unknowingly stood behind Natalie MacMaster. I was admiring her kids and was about to comment on them to their mother, when I realized who she was and I got shy and then it was her turn at the ticket counter. Meanwhile, dh was looking at her husband who is a musician, and started telling me (after she left) all about both their bands and all the names, etc..

He's fairly well known here in NS (excepting Colleen of course. :D) and has even been nominated for a Juno (Canadian Grammy). Generally Canadian-country stuff with a bit of traditional Nova Scotia stuff (re: fiddling. :))...I bet if you heard some of his songs Colleen you'd know him.

His best known are the following songs (links will take you to a page with the audio):
Mama Likes to Rock 'n' Roll (http://www.terry-kelly.com/recordings/recordings-face.htm#top)
In My Father's House (http://www.terry-kelly.com/recordings/recordings-divided.htm#top) My favourite - Everyone who reads this thread should listen to it.
Old Tyme Christmas (http://www.terry-kelly.com/recordings/recordings-olde.htm#top)

:o:o:o I actually don't listen to much music these days, that's why I'd never heard of him. You wouldn't think, in a house with a musician, eh? I mostly listen to classical from a boxed collection I bought, just because it's soothing to me and has no words to command my attention!

Well, I originally come from BC, so it would be a long, long way for a workshop ;). He taught it at UBC one of these past few summers between 2005 & 2008 (I'm trying to remember when it was we chatted about it, but he wasn't the only one to be invited to do this). fwiw, the run in at the airport was about 9 years ago, or perhaps earlier, because I didn't have 3 dc yet. Now that that set of cousins are almost all parents, I'm not sure if they still play together often or more for other groups. The guitarist I mentioned is by far the most steady & serious with it, I think; he teaches & plays.

Thanks, Karin.

We watched this one at our house. It's the History Channel's "History of Veterans Day." Nice of all these places to help us homeschoolers out, eh?!

Thanks. I just got this today; I hadn't realized how many days I was away from the forum. Busy time of year, eh? I'm going to watch this today.
