We are looking for a Latin program that:
teaches grammar
has variety
has pictures
can be broken down into small lessons so we can go slower
is open and go (I don't have to chase down a bunch of componets)
can be done orally as well as some writing
teaches root words and meanings
Does Lively Latin fit the bill? Am I wasting my money to buy it? This will be our English program with journaling/writing prompts for composition. Thanks.:001_smile:

We are looking for a Latin program that:
teaches grammar Yes. It teaches grammar via English examples, then Latin
has variety Oh, yes. There are different activities in each lesson -- fill-ins, matching, drawing pictures (of vocab. words), short answer, matching. And, each Chapter has different order of items. Every other chapter has vocabulary, there is derivative work, history and art study mixed in as well.
has pictures There is plenty of clip art throughout the book for variety and color, and photos of art in the history section, plus the art study.
can be broken down into small lessons so we can go slower
is open and go (I don't have to chase down a bunch of componets) Yes, each chapter has 8 to 11 or 12 parts. Outside a stack of notecards and glue for making flashcards and a pencil and 3 ring binder, you are all set. I do have shortcuts on my computer's desk top so that my ds can use the online vocabulary drill for variety a couple times a week.
can be done orally as well as some writing Absolutely it can be done orally. some of the grammar lessons we've done orally first, then the same or next day I'll assign it in writing for review.
teaches root words and meanings Yes, the vocabulary lists provide the foundation for learning the derivatives. The beginning of the book (introduction) has a lengthly child-friendly explanation of the history of the romance languages and has a family tree to fill in for the languages. I remember in on lesson, we learned all about the words with "terra-" as the root. Another lesson explained all about prefixes.
Does Lively Latin fit the bill? Am I wasting my money to buy it? This will be our English program with journaling/writing prompts for composition. The most writing you'll have is in the Roman history section. After reading the history lesson, the child is encouraged to make their own history book by summarizing the story and illustrating it. My ds, who used to be quite reluctant to attempt this type of activity will do it without prodding or asking.
Thanks.:001_smile:
Hope I've answered your questions. We're quite happy with LL. Hope this helps!

Another yes to all of your questions. We are using it for 4th grade as the bulk of our language program along with lots of writing. It is very open and go for us so it always gets done at the start of our day for about 30 minutes. I will definately move on to LL 2 later this year when we finish the first one.

I've also been quite pleased with the program for most of the points you mentioned. We're not doing any writing with it, but I suppose we could expand it. My DS even likes the program!

Yes to all of those things. The grammar is at about a 3rd grade level. I would not use it as my only grammar program past the 4th grade.
