View Full Version : Can I have some opinions on Sonlight Science 6?

We are currently using Prentice Hall Science Explorer books, which I like, but I am considering using Sonlight 6 for science next year. I've used Sonlight Core 3 & 4 and liked them, although we weren't thrilled with Science 3. That is the reason for my post - I'd hate to spend the $$ on Science 6 to find it was as lackluster as we found 3 to be.
My other option I'm considering is using Chem C1000 (ala TWTM recommendation) and supplementing with 2 PH Chemistry books I already own.
Thoughts?

If you've used it, you must have *some* opinion, good or bad! :001_unsure:

I haven't used the newer Science 6 - all I can tell you is that the TOPS books from that level (Cohesion/Adhesion and Analysis) are fantastic, and while I'm not doing the whole program again, my 12 yo ds is about to do just those books on his own.
HTH!

I asked about the experiments in all the levels a while back ago because I wanted to know if my dd could do SL Science on her own. The feedback I got was 6 has some pretty challenging experiments, that required parental help, even if the kids had done 3-5 independently. It was also not a parental favorite, probably based on this. I wanted to say it also had more of the experiments not linking up like the earlier levels, but that I am more fuzzy on. If you want challenging then it might be a good fit.
If you can you should ask on the choosing forum because everything I know is 2nd hand. At least two of the gals who I "talked to" post on that forum regularly.

My dd would love to do the TOPs books alone - I'm glad to hear that your 12yo is going to do that. My dd would be 12 next year when we'll be ready for SL6.
Thank you - I appreciate your feedback!

Ick - parental help is not what I want to hear! :willy_nilly: But I like your idea of asking the choosing forum - I'm not on SL forums much anymore since I switched to TOG. I buy enough from SL to maintain forum presence, I think (I just bought a microscope for example).
Good idea - thanks!
