similar to this book. Something a little under Stewart Little. He likes dragons, gobblins, hobbits, etc, and adventure, like the Gilgamesh trilogy by Zeman, but I'm looking for early chapter books like My Father's Dragon.

You might like to look at Dick King-Smith's books. Calvin suggests his The Merman, but there are many others. They vary in reading level - some are much easier than his Babe.

How about Roald Dahl books? Some are easier than other others but my 3rd grade dd has read through all of them and loves them. Good luck!

I 2nd Laura and whitestavern.
The easier Roald Dahl ones are
The Magic Finger, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Enormous Crocodile,
The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me
I have not looked at them, and my son has not read them but there is a series of books called The Dragon Slayers Academy (http://www.amazon.com/New-School-Dragon-Slayers-Academy/dp/0448431084/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202996309&sr=1-1)

I'd recommend a series called Dragon Slayers' Academy. My older DD enjoyed them.
From Wikipedia:
Dragon Slayers' Academy is a children's book series written by author Kate McMullan and illustrated by Bill Basso, published by Grosset & Dunlap. The series currently features 18 books varying from 100 - 220 pages. The books have been a cult hit since The New Kid At School was first published in 1997.
Basic Plot: The adventures of a young peasant boy Wiglaf of Pinwick and his 2 friends, Erica von Royale and Angus du Pangus during their stay at Angus' greedy Uncle Mordred's school (Dragon Slayers' Academy, or DSA) set in the Middle Ages.
Here's a list of all the books in the series.
1. The New Kid At School
2. Revenge of the Dragon Lady
3. Class Trip to the Cave of Doom
4. A Wedding For Wiglaf?
5. Knight For A Day
6. Sir Lancelot, Where Are You?
7. Wheel of Misfortune
8. Countdown to the Year 1000
9. 97 Ways To Train A Dragon
10. Help! It's Parents Day At DSA
11. Danger! Wizards At Work

I second the Dick King-Smith. You might also want to check out Joanna Hurwitz (Rip-Roaring Russell and sequels), Beverley Cleary's The Mouse and the Motorcycle and sequels, and Mr. Popper's Penguins,
