View Full Version : Good probotic
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good probotic? DS's OT recommended that he take this for a while. He doesn't do pills. Any other probotic suggestions would be great!
TIA,

my favorites are
Dr. Ohhira
Primal Defense by Garden of Life
Jarrow-Dophilus
Udo's Probiotic for Kids (also one for infants)
I tend to keep Ohhira, Primal Defense and Udo Children's on hand. My kids take probiotics a couple times a week, more if a gut bug is making the rounds or if they feel sick. They take Udo's (tiny easy to swallow capsule....teensy) and Dr. Ohhira. Also a small cap. Says it can be chewed but I wouldn't want to try.
The Udo's can also be opened up and sprinkled onto something....even one's tongue, then swallowed with water.
I take Primal Defense and Ohhira on a rotating basis.
iherb.com generally has the best prices and the fastest turnover

We take these:

They are tiny small round pearls. I'm sorry I don't know of any in powder form. I think part of that reasoning would be that it would be killed off in the stomach due to the acid before it had a chance to get to the small and large intestines. That is why most of them are in some type of pill/capsule form. Take a look at the Pearls they about half the size of an M&M.

I don't take a specific probiotic. I just eat good quality yogurt.
in little packets in flavored powder form. You can sprinkle in mouth, under the tongue and then drink water or mix in with water or other liquid. It really is a treat, like candy, my son says :tongue_smilie:.
From what I remember when I was researching before purchasing for the first time, it is a very good product.
Good luck!

I don't think you need anything too expensive. My dh is very into holistic/alternative medicine/methods. I am not. at. all. I do, however have digestive issues that go unresolved despite full GI workups, dr visits, etc. (stress related, doncha know). So....I agreed to take a probiotic he bought (he said he got the cheapest one, since he didn't expect me to be faithful in taking it). Well, what do you know! After 3 weeks I noticed a marked improvement. What he got looks generic (white bottle, blue cap) and says "Pro-Biotics Acidophilus" on the label.

I buy from Vitacost.com and use the NSI brand. If you want something not in capsule form though I've given these to my kids.

Look around the site you'll find lots of good stuff and I've been very happy with the speed of shipping.

My Aspie daughter, who is EXTREMELY sensitive and can't tolerate any type of pill, LOVES Buddy Bear Probiotics by Renew Life. They are orange-flavored chewables. We found them at our local health food store.

Our family uses the Shaklee vitamins, including probiotics. Theirs are also the tiny pearl pills, and my son takes them without any problems.
Their main website with these is: http://public.shaklee.guided.atomz.com/?q=probiotic
There are so many choices, but you are sure to find something that will work for your DS.

I wanted to second Shaklee. I have had great success with these. For me, any other cheap brand does not do the same thing. I've tried many (darling mother thinks that they are all the same and has given me lots). I have heard good things about the Garden of Life products, too.
Thanks! I will look it to these.

was recommended by Dianne Craft in her "Biology of Behavior" CD, she's a hs consultant who works with alot of special needs kids. Her claim is that kids versions of probiotics are not potent enough to have a significant impact, and she's observed that this brand works well. It must be bought refrigerated (make sure it ships to the store in refrigerated containers also) and kept refrigerated. The pills are small, but I open them and mix with food or drink becuase my dd has trouble swallowing pills.

Biokult is a strong probiotic, shelf-stable, made to taste pleasant in case the child can't swallow it (can open the capsule and sprinkle on food). My picky daughter even chews it sometimes. Most of the store-bought probiotics are prophylactic -- made for healthy people to maintain good gut health.
You can read more about Biokult on the Nutrivene website.
