This week my six year old dd has been reading through some Rookie Read-About Science books. She has been enjoying them very much, and she said to me, "I like these books because they are about real things that little kids are interested in." If you knew my dd in real life, you'd know that's exactly the kind of thing she would say. She spent a year resisting learning to read because she wasn't interested in any of the "Pat sat on the mat" kinds of beginning readers. It wasn't until I had the bright idea of borrowing from my dad HIS old first-grade readers (Day In and Day Out and Fun in Story) that my dd really got interested. They are phonics-based but more interesting and challenging than anything I could find at the library.
So anyway, here's a plug for Rookie Read-About Science books AND the Alice and Jerry readers by Mabel O'Donnell (I just ordered her the second grade reader, Round About, used from Amazon ... these are the real, 1941 printings).
