Thanks for any input on which of these you would recommend!

We're using Abeka DVD for the first time this year, just for 7th grade math. My dd LOVES it. It's video of an actual class where the teacher has the students come up to the board to work out their practice problems, which is really nice because my dd is a visual learner, so she can actually see what's going on. They also "talk it out" while working the problems, so she has the auditory benefit, as well. The teacher moves pretty fast so that if my dd were IN the classroom, she'd be lost. But having the remote control to pause, rewind and fast forward where necessary is really nice. :)
I don't even have to check my dd's homework because the teacher does it at the beginning of class each day. I do check her quizzes and tests, though.... just because. ;)

My oldest is using A Beka's DVD program this year. We used Calvert before and moved to A Beka. My student is older and for her the program is almost self sufficient. I do need to check over the DVD lesson plan for each class, administer tests, track and keep grades, but for an older student the parent daily teaching is minimal.
I did research and compare BJ and AB before choosing. We liked the regular class video as well as the actual materials. Last year we used A Beka's LA program without the DVDs. ymmv
I'd suggest getting a demo dvd if you haven't got one and attending a hotel meeting in your area.

Haven't used Abeka, but we love BJUP. They have samples of every class online, so go take a look.
Before we started homeschooling (which was quite a while ago), I studied the sample DVDs for both Abeka and BJUP. They were very, very different. Take a look at both, and you'll probably feel a clear leaning one way or the other.
