for their history spine in 1st grade? I am trying to decide between this and SOTW 1. I've heard a lot of good about SOTW, but am interested in hearing from those who have chosen Josephus. I saw this recommended at TanglewoodEducation.com.
Thanks.

I *love* Our Young Folks Josephus. I was reading this for our 1st grade year...however, I did decide to wait another 2 years so as to just combine my boys. We will definitely use it though. ;)
We got 4 chapters in and I realized just what a gem this book really is, next best thing to a primary source, IMO...and I just really felt it was best left for both boys together, since that is my ultimate goal: combining the boys. (of course I guess we could just read it twice lol)

I use it as a supplement where Biblioplan + SOTW coincide with Jewish history, but I don't see it as a replacement for SOTW. We like it. My children are so familiar with the Bible now that I am reading from Josephus this time around instead of the Bible itself as we are progressing through the Israelite portions of Ancients.

We have read it along with SOTW twice now. I don't worry about plugging in chapters to match it up or anything. We often have 2 or 3 "spine" type books going at once. It is nice to have a different perspective and by doing so I have had the joy of watching the connections between stories "kick in" so to speak.
We also read the Gueber books along with SOTW and loved those too.

For my ds, it was too much when added to SOTW. But my ds hasn't (so far) been wild about history.
The sections in Josephus are short, and the writing is interesting. The age designation on the back of the book says 9+, but it wouldn't hurt to try it earlier. If it turns out to be too much history, you could always use it on the next cycle through (which is what I am going to do!).

Yes, I'll agree with Cassandra on this. If your goal is doing a true chronological study, and you want to do Ancients with your young child...Josephus would not be a total *replacement* for SOTW. We will use it that way because we choose not to do a 'total' ancients study in the young years so as with anything else in different families...YMMV. :D

I plan to use both SOTW and Josephus. Does anyone have a schedule or tips on merging the two and keeping it chronological?
Thanks so much. I put it on this thread so y'all who have already used it might get it on your cp. :D
