Anyone able to compare the two? I'm having trouble deciding!

My questions:

Specifically, what does a daily lesson look like for you?
I know many do R & S orally and I would do the same, but is there an advantage of the child having the words in front of him/her with the R & S text?
Also how long does a typical English lesson take?
This would be for Levels 2 and 4. (My guys have not yet encountered formal grammar.)

We use FLL & WWE for my 2nd grader and R&S for my fourth grader. I'm not sure I will be much help since I can't decide if I should switch my 2nd grader to R&S after we finish his current FLL book in a few weeks.

I find FLL to be very simple and not very challenging for my 2nd grader. He has learned his definitions for nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and the list of prepositions. He also knows about the different kinds of sentences and their punctuation. So maybe it is easy by design. Level one and two of FLL are very auditory and my son is very visual so we have started using a dry erase board to write out responses that he would normally say.

I started my oder son on Rod & Staff 3 last year and am continuing with book 4 this year. I find it very helpful for us both to have a book to read from while going over the lesson. We do most of the work orally because he dislikes writing. I am adding WWE for him because I like the way it teaches writing and I think it will help with narrations and outlining he will be doing in his other subjects. The writing assignments in R&S seem disjointed and far apart. I just don't get very excited about them.

Rod and Staff is very simmilar to the texts I remember using as a child, but I think they are more complete. Lots of references to farming, Bible verses since it is a Menonite (sp) publication.

For us, lessons take no longer than 15 minutes usually--both R&S and FLL. WWE varies, days 1&4 of the week take longer because they are writing a narration of a story. The other two days are copywork.

I hope this helps!

My 8yo is visual as well and the dry erase board is a great idea.

This is definitely the appeal of R & S for me.

And yes, this was very helpful... especially with boys of similar ages!

Thank you,
