New College Latin and English Dictionary by John Traupman
Third Edition, Revised and Updated
2007
This dictionary has been through three editions. Be sure to get the THIRD edition, which is the most recent. Includes over 70,000 words and phrases, Latin to English and English to Latin, includes Late Latin and Neo-Latin words and has a Latin grammar guide. You can use this book for looking up Classical and medieval words, plus it also includes modern terms. There are TWO publishers. The Bantam edition is $5.99 and you can find it in most bookstores as well as on Amazon. The AMSCO edition is about $14. The Bantam is a typical, mass market paperback, while the AMSCO edition is a larger, trade paperback sized book (with larger type, if that's important to you.)

The 2nd edition of this is what my daughter's first year Latin instructor recommended way back then. She's now doing AP Latin, and Traupman's dictionary continues to serve her well.

The third edition is the most recent. The second edition was excellent, but the third edition is even better. My copy of the second edition is worn out and definitely looks used. The third edition has been expanded and includes many new words. I use it all the time. (The other dictionary I have is the Elementary Latin Dictionary by Lewis, but it's about $50 and it is not so portable. However, for each word it does include an example of its usage from Classical authors, so it's great for determining context.)
