Dd is 7th gr. and I struggle with her academics. I am humbled by my ignorance and by a brain that is challenged with understanding logic, latin, literary terms, great books, grammar, science, history, writing, music, art, and everything else.

I don't think I can manage high school. How do provide meaningful education when your eyes glaze over looking at the curriculum and you dread picking up the text?

I do try to prepare, but all of this is so new to me, that I feel like I am recreating the wheel, and I'm feeling woefully inadequate.

Is my best truly enough or is it time to consider school? Angela:confused1:

Hi Angela,

Only you can decide - you know your own limitations and the personality of your daughter. I once asked a mom who had 3 sons who were all pursing computers in college how she did it - she was computer illiterate. She said at some point they start teaching themselves.

That said, I have reservations about my child teaching himself - he's not the motivated type.

I have been thinking of high school, too. It's intimidating. I can do math easy, since I have a degree in it. I *might* be able to do literature. Science, history, foreign language...forget it. I need help. We are fortunate to be able to have our students be able to attend the local community college here starting in 10th grade. That's an option. CC is free and good quality. Public high schools here are free but poor quality. Private high schools here are good and expensive. Then, there's the online high school which is free but questionable quality. There are private on-line options that are good quality and cheaper than private school.

So, take a look at your options. Take a look at your daughter. How much does she want to remain homeschooling? How willing/able is she to self-educate?

I hope you get more answers from those who have BTDT.

I felt pretty good about the lit and history we were covering, until I compared myself with Eliana on these boards, whose knowledge of literature is stunning. Just--stunning.
I guess it depends on what your goals are. And, if you want to continue where you are not confident, you need very supportive materials. I have found Omnibus to be quite helpful in providing lesson plans and discussion questions, assignments and ANSWERS! Very important for me.
I also think outsourcing is a viable alternative to both public school and doing it all yourself. Community College here has been helpful.
