We went to Home Depot and got a large piece of plexi glass. My husband put some inexpensive trim around it and hung it on the wall. It is clear so you can see the color of our walls behind it which makes it easy to see what you have written. Also, a friend of mine uses a large piece of the white fiberglass (shower stall wall) that she got at home depot and it looks identical to a white board only larger. HTH!

What kind of markers do you use on them?

Great, what kind of markers do you use on it and what do you use to clean it with?

You can actually buy a roll of whiteboard contact paper here. (http://www.discountschoolsupply.com/product/productdetail.aspx?product=23066&es=10190200000) I covered part of a sliding glass mirror with it and covered the rest with glued-on corkboard. It's been working great! You have to make sure the mirror is very clean when you put it on to get it to stick right but so far it's staying on pretty well (it's been up for 3 months now).

We put up a white tile board sheet from Home Depot ($12 plus some screws to mount it) this summer and use dry erase markers on it. So far so good. I really enjoy having so much space to write. It has made it much easier to teach both kids.

I have the same tile board from home depot that Tillie does. It is fantastic. I do have dry erase board cleaner, and use that to get a good clean on stuff that has been on the board for a while. It looks brand new after using it. I haven't had any problems with regular dry erase board markers from a number of manufacturers. My 3yo has tried out a variety of crayola markers and vis-a-vis pens, and they've all been cleaned off with ease. Good Luck!

Another vote for tile board. When we start homeschooling again, I am going to cover one wall with tileboard (not the whole wall, but we are going big, Baby!).

We have the same tile board that everyone else has, we cut it down and dh hung it with mirror brackets, no need to screw into the tile board and it only took four.

If you want a fun idea for something smaller, get a picture frame with glass, and instead of a picture, put a fun scrapbook paper in it. You can write on the glass with a regular white-board eraser.
This obviously would not be recommended for little ones, but it would be fun to have near your desk, or for older kid's desks.

We also got shower board at Home Depot. They cut it in half for us so we have 2 4X4 pieces. LOVE them!
We use the dry erase markers on it and clean it with our normal cleaning spray (tile spray leaves a film that will ruin the markers).

In using alcohol to clean our regular dry erase boards that we have now, I have found that it is really hard to erase the marker from them. Is that because of using the alcohol to clean them? Should I just be using the dry erase board cleaner on the shower tile board, or do you find that any cleaner will allow the eraser to do it's job?

I have the dry erase cleaner that they sell in the aisle with other office supplies at Staples/Walmart. It seems that there are some of my markers that erase better than others, so I wonder if it is more of an issue with the type of marker that you are using.
