My ds is in first grade but hasn't had any formal first grade math. I'm afraid the beginning of Abeka 1 might be to easy for him but not sure if Abeka 2 might be too hard.

I think Abeka 1 moves pretty fast. I know my first grader probably wouldn't do well in the 2nd grade book. However, you know you son best.

I don't know of any placements tests. I think your best bet is to look at the scope and sequence.
